Opera, string quartet or dance theatre – Lithuanian ministries will decide who will travel to “EXPO 2020”

The inter-institutional coordination commission of Lithuania’s preparation for participation in “EXPO 2020”, formed by the order of the Minister of the Environment, is starting discussions on which groups and performers could go to the exhibition to present the art of our country.

One of the most ambitious proposals was submitted by the producer and founder of the Vilnius City Opera troupe Dalia Ibelhauptaitė. If approved, the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra led by Gintaras Rinkevičius, group of internationally acclaimed opera singers (Vida Miknevičiūtė, Almas Švilpa, Ieva Prudnikovaitė, Lina Dambrauskaitė and others) accompanied by electronic music band, would take part in the exhibition this October. Fragments of a successful project “From That Opera” prepared with private “MO Museum” would also be transported to the exhibition.

Other options, that would be simpler in terms of logistics, were also discussed, one of them is the performances of Martynas Levickis and “Mikroorkéstra” String Quartet, or another one – performance of the New Ideas Chamber Orchestra “NIKO” (conductor Gediminas Gelgotas), which had already successfully performed at the previous EXPO exhibition. The Lithuanian Institute of Culture suggested paying attention to the performance “Boléro Extended” of the Šeiko Dance Theater (director Agnija Šeiko) or a slightly earlier production of this troupe “Seasons”.

There will be few topics of discussions with the representatives of the Ministry of Culture, first of all about the applicants, and there may appear more suggestions, secondly the budget required for the performers travel, so the possible financial solutions would be found. “The most important dates in the world exhibitions are not the opening and closing, but the national days of the participating countries, which are attended by their heads of state, numerous delegations, on that occasion concerts, performances, receptions, business missions are organised,” explains Commissioner of Lithuanian Pavilion Romas Jankauskas.

Up to a hundred and more performers from Lithuania went to previous EXPO exhibitions in Japan, China, Italy and elsewhere. Exceptionally successful and worth remembering performances were made by former State Song and Dance Ensemble “Lithuania” (2010, Shanghai), ballroom dancing group “Žuvėdra” (2012, Yeosu, S. Korea), Vilnius City Municipality St. Christopher Chamber Orchestra and Vilnius Teachers’ Home choir “Bel Canto” (2015, Milan), the already mentioned New Ideas Chamber Orchestra “NIKO” (2017, Astana). The choir “Ąžuoliukas” and the Wind Orchestra “Trimitas” (2008, Zaragoza), dozens of smaller groups and individual performers have given concerts during EXPO.

Lithuania’s National Day during the world exhibition “EXPO 2020” will be celebrated on 22nd of October. This date was confirmed after a long calendar adjustment – 194 countries will have to present themselves at the event in 182 days.
